Visual Therapy

Visual Therapy:

It is the interaction of the nervous and visual systems.

The neuro-optometric examination is to perform a complete optometric examination, taking into account that when evaluating the eyes we integrate the neurological function into the professional practice of the optometrist. There are numerous neurological disorders that interrupt or alter communication between the eyes and the brain. For this reason, we can evaluate and rehabilitate a strabismus caused by a brain contusion or a paralysis of one of the cranial nerves, or a loss of visual field after a car accident, or a visual-perceptual dysfunction after a stroke.

Neuro-optometric rehabilitation is also recovering a lazy eye due to visual disconnection, with an emphasis on integrating the two systems in the recovery of a patient and is what we popularly know as Visual Therapy or Visual Rehabilitation if the case is more complex.

Strabismus

If the brain cannot see through one eye and if it has not learned to regulate its eye movements, if the muscles that move the eyes fail, if you do not understand the image that each eye sees or you see double, then we will be facing strabismus. But strabismus is not always obvious, you or your child can suffer from it without noticing it because you will have suppressed or restricted the image of that eye.

Lazy eye

Lazy eye or amblyopia is the loss of Visual Acuity that most of the time does not have an organic (pathological) cause that could cause it. When you have worse vision in one eye compared to the other, many things can happen and unfortunately it also often goes unnoticed.

Its early detection is essential, because in addition to its vagueness and poor vision, this eye can deviate or disconnect irreversibly.

Amblyopia is normally due to high or unequal refractive errors that make that eye incompetent. An example of this is having one healthy eye and only being farsighted in the second eye. This will cause the farsighted eye to not develop on equal terms and become lazy or wander.

But it may also be due to dysfunctional neurological information between the retina and the visual cortex that must be optimized in the visual, perceptual and motor areas.

Non-organic amblyopia is always treatable. We just have to know how to interact. There is no age to improve these dysfunctional processes. Our brain has neuroplasticity.
